Fern and Fern-allies of Sikkim: A Pictorial Handbook Part II
As indicators of forest health, Ferns and Lycophytes are major constituents of many biomes and ecosystems. Their diversity is manifold higher than that of other groups of plants in various temperate, tropical and subtropical rainforests, including the Himalayan mountains. To highlight the beauty, ecological importance and economic potential of this group of plants, the author undertook the work of writing a pictorial series on Sikkim’s Pteridophytes in 2010. In the first part of this series, besides the main pictorial description of 150 species from Sikkim, certain general topics on morphology, ecology, collection procedure, economic use, and conservation were highlighted.
In the present volume, 260 more taxa are added on the same lines as in the first part, and about 85% of Sikkim Pteridophytes are covered in both these volumes. Specimens of these species are also available in many renowned world herbaria, like the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew (K), the British Museum (BM), Royal Botanical Gardens. Edinburgh (E), etc., and pictures of a few of them are also examined.
