In 1975, the last king of Sikkim, Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, was deposed, and the 330-year-old Himalayan kingdom became the twenty-second state of India. While all official narratives state that the union was amicable, what really took place remains contested to this day.
Two decades later, a singular question preoccupied Jackie Hiltz, writer and scholar—Exactly what had happened to bring the kingdom to its end? Gradually, this question grew into an enduring obsession. Over the next couple of decades, she travelled often to Sikkim and New Delhi, meeting key people—participants as well as others who had had a ringside view of events—sifting through archives, travelling to far-flung corners of the state, and digging for an answer.
What emerged from her obsession was
A Kingdom Remembered: a cohesive, meticulously researched political history of Sikkim spanning three centuries that is also deeply personal. In accessible, engaging prose, Jackie Hiltz uncovers and pieces together, layer by layer, the complicated and tragic history of a vanished kingdom.
