Butterflies are the most studied insect in the world, and there is no dearth of books on butterflies. This book is one such attempt by amateur butterfly enthusiasts of Sikkim. One of the primary objectives of publishing this book was to record the firsthand experiences of the authors who’ve had the privilege of having their childhood coloured by these light-winged creatures. Another essential objective of this book is to revise the checklist of butterflies in Sikkim. The authors have attempted to update the checklist of 689 species published in “The Butterflies of Sikkim Himalaya and their Natural History” by Meena Haribal in 1992 to 753 species. 64 more butterfly species have been added to the list. This is one of the crucial achievements of BAMOS NCS in the study of butterflies in Sikkim.
Each species’ description begins with its scientific binomial name, which is followed by the short name of the first person to describe it, the year of the first description enclosed in brackets, and the common name that is commonly used throughout the Indian subcontinent. The descriptions of adult butterflies (imago) cover wingspan, colour and patterns, tails, and antennae, and are primarily based on literature and personal observations. It also includes information on larval food plants based on both research and field observations. “Recent records in Sikkim” refers to butterfly sightings made within Sikkim’s political boundaries over the past decade by BAMOS NCS members and other enthusiasts, which is another key feature of this book. This is the authors’ inaugural attempt at publishing a book on Sikkim’s butterflies, and they have strived to make it simple, scientific, and comprehensive.

Matrika Sharma serves as a Post Graduate Teacher of History at PMSHRI Government Senior Secondary School, Dikling and holds a master’s degree in history and sustainable development. He is a passionate naturalist with a deep interest in butterflies and nature photography. Since 2010, he has been devoted to observing and photographing butterflies across Sikkim, with a particular focus on studying their life cycles and behaviours. His dedication to documenting the region's Lepidopteran diversity reflects both scientific curiosity and a heartfelt commitment to environmental conservation.
Dorjee Chewang Bhutia is a dedicated naturalist and conservation enthusiast from Sikkim whose lifelong passion for nature has guided both his personal and professional journey. A graduate in Life Sciences (Zoology), he began his career as a Survey Assistant under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), contributing to the Sikkim Biodiversity Conservation and Forest Management Project (SBFP) for over twelve years. His field expertise further expanded through his involvement as a Field Assistant in the Freshwater Fish Conservation Initiative, a collaborative effort between ICAR, Tadong, NEH Regional Centre, and the Directorate of Fisheries, Government of Sikkim. His contribution to the study was featured in the publication "Biodiversity of Sikkim - Exploring and Conserving a Global Hotspot", particularly in the section on Fish biodiversity as an indicator of the river status of Sikkim. Beyond his professional engagements, Dorjee's deep love for wildlife led him to pursue butterfly watching as a personal passion. His commitment to this field earned him a place in the Butterflies and Moths of Sikkim-Nature Conservation Society (BAMOS-NCS), where he serves as the Assistant Treasurer. Currently, he works as an Office Assistant in the Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, continuing his mission to promote conservation and awareness about biodiversity.
